Armenia Extends Metsamor Nuclear Plant Operation to Strengthen Energy Stability
Infrastructure projects and regional connections support long-term power strategy

Armenia's Metsamor nuclear power plant operation may extend until 2046.
Armenia is continuing efforts to maintain the Metsamor nuclear power plant (Մեծամորի ատոմային էլեկտրակայան) [Metsamori atomayin elektrakayan] within its national energy system, as part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring long-term electricity supply. According to government reporting presented in parliament, the facility’s operation life extension program (շահագործման ժամկետի երկարաձգման ծրագիր) [shahagortsman zhamketi yerkaradzgman tsragir] remained active throughout 2025 and is being further implemented to secure continued operation over the next decade.
Officials confirmed that ongoing measures are designed to preserve the plant’s functionality and integration into the national grid, highlighting its role in maintaining energy system stability (էներգետիկ համակարգի կայունություն) [energetik hamakargi kayunutyan]. The extension program includes technical upgrades, safety improvements, and regulatory compliance measures, all of which are essential for sustaining nuclear energy production under international standards.
In parallel with these efforts, Armenia is advancing key infrastructure projects to strengthen regional energy connectivity. One of the main developments is the construction of the Armenia–Iran power transmission line (Հայաստան–Իրան էլեկտրահաղորդման գիծ) [Hayastan–Iran elektrahaghordman gits], a high-voltage connection designed to facilitate electricity exchange between the two countries. Authorities reported that approximately 85 percent of the work on this project has already been completed.
The expansion of cross-border infrastructure reflects a broader approach focused on regional energy integration (տարածաշրջանային էներգետիկ ինտեգրում) [taratsashrjanayin energetik integroum], which aims to enhance flexibility and resilience within Armenia’s power network. By strengthening interconnections with neighboring systems, Armenia can better manage supply fluctuations and improve efficiency in electricity distribution.
The Metsamor plant remains a central component of Armenia’s electricity generation capacity, providing a significant share of the country’s power output. Maintaining its operation is therefore closely linked to national energy security (ազգային էներգետիկ անվտանգություն) [azgayin energetik anvtangutyan], particularly in a region where energy resources and supply routes are subject to geopolitical influences.
Government officials emphasized that the continuation of these projects aligns with the objectives outlined in Armenia’s 2021–2026 development program. This includes ensuring reliable infrastructure, modernizing existing facilities, and expanding international cooperation in the energy sector. The combination of nuclear energy maintenance and infrastructure expansion demonstrates a coordinated approach to long-term energy planning (երկարաժամկետ էներգետիկ պլանավորում) [erkarazhamket energetik planavorum].
In addition to technical considerations, the extension of the plant’s operation requires adherence to international safety protocols and oversight mechanisms. Regular inspections and upgrades are necessary to meet evolving standards, particularly given the age of the facility. These measures are part of broader nuclear safety compliance frameworks (ատոմային անվտանգության համապատասխանության համակարգեր) [atomayin anvtangutyan hamapatasxanutyan hamakarger], which govern the continued operation of nuclear installations.
Overall, Armenia’s approach combines maintaining existing generation capacity with expanding infrastructure connections, ensuring that the national energy system remains stable and adaptable. The continuation of the Metsamor plant’s operation, alongside progress on regional transmission projects, reflects a strategic effort to secure reliable energy supply in the coming years.
